Group Dynamics

Group Dynamic Activities, are short problem solving activities of between 15 minutes and two hours held outdoors for small teams to complete. These activities provide you with time to assess, to establish a rapport, to have fun and to deal with the basic group process. The Group dynamic activities focus on the following broad principles:

  • Ice breaker/Acquaintance. De-inhibitizer.
  • Trust and Empathy. Communication.
  • Decision-making/Problem solving. Planning & Time Management.
  • Personal & Social responsibility.

These activities are continuously being developed, however names and descriptions of some of the activities are as follows.

Neutralizer

An activity where the team would have to lift two buckets from inside a no-go area at the same time and to bring them together into the center with one bucket inside the other. The catch is that the team is trapped in an area 30m away and can only leave the area once blindfolded.

Pulling Strings

An activity where the team members are each holding a piece of string, linked to a plate with a jar of water on the plate. Through teamwork the team must move the plate from one bucket to another without upsetting the jar.

Bridge pier crossing

An activity where two teams who are trapped on either side of a river and have to cross from one side to the other. There are bridge piers left over after a flood in the river. The teams would have some equipment in order to facilitate the crossing.

The Jolly Roger

The Jolly Roger is an activity where the team would have to build a boat out of equipment provided (no 44 gallon drums provided). The boat could be of any size to take from about 5 pax to as many as 50 pax, and with no one getting wet, except possibly their feet. The boat building exercise breaks from the traditional paradigm of using drums and poles and is a lot safer, and people have a minimal chance of getting wet, which makes this an ideal winter activity.

GPS Orienteering

The small teams would be issued with a GPS and Compass and Map and the task would be to move out into the bush to find as many “Way Points” as possible with the help of the navigation tools issued. The way-points would be worth differing values based on difficulty and distance from home base. Decision-making and negotiating skills are of importance here as well as teamwork

Team Blowpipe

An activity where the team is presented with pipes and joiners and asked to make a team blowpipe in order to send a projectile as far as possible.

Retrieval of the Holy Grail

An activity where the team must get a team member into the middle of some toxic waste to retrieve the Holy Grail, without any equipment or persons entering the area of toxic Waste.

Apollo 13

Based on a true life incident on the Apollo 13 mission this communication activity asks the team to solve a puzzle and then to transmit construction instructions to another team.

Centipede

A team co-ordination event where the team must walk as a team on two sets of plank linked together with chains.

The Great Egg Drop

Each team is presented with limited equipment and asked to build a vehicle in which an egg must drop from a height of at least 3m and survive the fall.

Shelob’s Web

The team is faced with a large spider’s web and the team is to get through it without waking Shelob the spider.

Balloon Castles

The team to build the tallest freestanding, self supporting balloon structure.

Protruding Bridge

The team is presented with a newspaper and some other equipment and is asked to build a structure protruding out from a table as far as possible and strong enough to hold a cocktail can of coke.

Pipe Ball

By making use of pipes and joiners the team must get a ball to travel a certain distance.

Breach

The team is tasked to set up a structure between a no go zone and then to transport as much water across the no-go zone as possible.

Treasure Hunt

The team will be given parts of a treasure map showing where they need to go to find another part of the map as well as cryptic clues as to how to open the treasure box. Each team will have to solve visual as well as cryptic clues in order to find the next clue. There would also be problem solving activities along the way. The treasure hunt will be tailored to clients needs and time available.

Potjiekos Competition

Teams would be allocated regions to represent whether it be regions in SA or different countries. The Team would then have to submit an ingredient list to ourselves prior to the team-build. The teams will then have to prepare their meal and their table. The other teams would do the judging and there would be four categories for the purpose of judging.

(a) Table presentation representing the region or country
(b) Team member dress in the fashions of the region or Country
(c) Presentation as to why people should eat from their table
(d) Taste of the food

There would be a small trophy for the winning team members.

Brain Aerobics Quiz

The group would be split into two or three teams and the program would be set up as for a quiz show. The team members would then have to solve puzzles, and word games, They would have to do certain things and set challenges to other teams all in the aim of fun. There would be a small trophy for the winning team members.
